Police Digital Service to roll out IT security testing

Plans for a £1m national service to protect the IT systems of forces have been revealed. The testing system could be rolled out to other Blue Light services.

A new monitoring system is set to be rolled out to protect forces' data from cyber attacks.

The Police Digital Service (PDS) Commercial Team has revealed details for a new cyber security penetration testing services framework to cover all forces.

Up to 10 suppliers are being sought for the £1m contract which could also provide the same service for all other emergency services and law enforcement agencies in future.

This will be for a period of four years -with an initial term of two years – starting from late October 2021. The closing date for receipt of tenders is 1 September 2021.

The PDS is the delivery vehicle for the National Policing Digital Strategy, which launched last year.

One of its priorities is improving data sharing between forces but before this can happen the security of their IT systems has to be improved.

Dave Edwards, Head of Commercial said, “This framework is an important enabler for the continued delivery of the National Policing Digital, Data and Technology Strategy (DDaT).

“It will help us to enhance the security of our systems and data, which is vital to keeping our communities safe and maintain the trust of the public. This will also enable forces and the partner agencies we work with to continue to exploit the opportunities modern connected technologies provide.”

The service is vital as it enables IT leads to manage their vulnerabilities for both cloud and hybrid networks across servers, workstations and other devices.

With forces increasingly relying on mobile devices for response teams

Mr Edwards said: “We hope to see some robust and innovative approaches from the supplier community.”
