Firearms officers are joining the recruitment drive by offering insight days.

The Police Firearms Officers Association has announced plans to hold a series of insight days for people thinking about joining the Service.

The one day events will be held at the PFOA headquarters in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, for people age over 18 who are thinking about joining the Police Service - and who may have aspirations to become firearms officers.

The day, which will cost £60, will consist of inputs from male and female officers plus serving and retired firearms officers. It will cover use of force, standards of behaviour and code of ethics as well as advice on preparing for a police career.

At the end will be an attendance certificate which could be used as evidence into their research and preparation for any subsequent interviews to join a force.

The PFOA will be promoting the events in a bid to improve diversity as well as raise awareness among potential recruits that specialist roles are now open to all.

Officers have previously raised concerns with the Police Federation that new recruits – particularly female officers - are not made aware early on that roles away from response work are an option.  

The PFOA, which has already had expressions of support from several forces, wants potential recruits to be ready for degree courses with awareness of career aspirations.

Mark Williams, PFOA Chief Executive, told Police Oracle: “Policing is a career – and a hugely rewarding one at that. Whatever role, it’s a job like no other. But it’s also important to understand what will be expected and some of the realities people face on duty.

“These insight days would be particularly useful to those contemplating joining the Ministry of Defence Police or Civil Nuclear Constabulary, who are both armed forces.”

He added: “Everyone wants to attract people into the job who are curious and motivated. We’re determined to do our bit to achieve that.”
