Seven officers under investigation following stop and search
The IOPC has said the conduct of seven Merseyside officers will be investigated regarding death of a man after a stop and search.
Robert Evans, 59, was found dead at his home address in Vauxhall, Liverpool On Sunday 3 July.
He had been detained by officers in public several days earlier on June 28. Following his death, the force referred the incident to the IOPC.
The cause of death is currently being treated as unexplained.
After having conducted door-to-door enquiries and reviewing footage, the IOPC has now informed six officers they are being investigated for potential gross misconduct and that they are under criminal investigation for potential assault offences in relation to their use of force on Mr Evans.
A seventh officer has been informed they are under investigation for potential misconduct.
The investigation does not mean conduct proceedings or criminal charges will necessarily follow.
IOPC Regional Director Catherine Bates said: “We are independent of the police and our investigation will be thorough to ensure we understand the circumstances of Mr Evans’ interaction with officers on 28 June.
“Upon conclusion of the investigation, we will decide whether any disciplinary proceedings, or referral to the Crown Prosecution Service, are required.
“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, and all those affected, at this sad time.”
