Olympics: Officers Praised For ‘Incredible Spirit’

ACPO President praises officers for cancelling leave and stepping up at short notice to make Games secure

ACPO President Sir Hugh Orde has said policing the Olympics has been “an object lesson in policing by consent” and congratulated officers for their commitment.

He praised all those involved for their “quiet dignity and good humour” and said officers had cancelled leave to be on-duty during the Games.

Officers who went to the Games under mutual aid arrangements had left behind their families at short notice, he added.
Sir Hugh said: “Met Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison led from the front with a passion and energy that I cannot praise highly enough.
“Officers from across the country cancelled leave and left their home towns and families, often at quite short notice, to band together to help make the past two weeks a success.
“It is the globally recognised, approachable demeanour and can-do attitude of the British officer that makes this Police Service great.”
Federation Chairman Paul McKeever and Vice-Chairman Simon Reed also praised the officers. They visited Olympic sites and said officers had displayed “incredible spirit, camaraderie and team work”.
Michael Taylor, Chairman of the Dorset Police Authority, praised his force and commended the officers who came under mutual aid arrangements to police the sailing events held in the county.
He said: “I congratulate Dorset Police on a first class Olympic safety operation, aided by the contribution from 35 other police forces. The detailed planning and implementation of the overall policing operation have been exemplary.”
