Is it time for a paid Special Constabulary/Police reserve

Despite the enthusiasm of the ex DCI I cant see the 'large marching army' of police pensioners being so enthused.

ASG (17/03/20 @ 17:25)

Ex Det DCS O’ Connor will be a uniform officer or will she assume her old rank

paul webb (17/03/20 @ 17:34)

Oh brilliant, I will return to duty wearing my cape, my old cork helmet and my trusty truncheon. Mind you I think I might have to have a new pair trousers. Then I will scare the snowflakes half to death with my completely non PC language and my capacity to drink endless cups of tea whilst talking to the public. Can I have my old salary as well?

Annoymous. (17/03/20 @ 18:21)

Ex DCS Connor your in cloud cuckoo land. Look at the way some officers have been treated as the article suggests ex DAC Tarrique Ghaffir, AC Shabir Hussain, Supt Paul Wilson, Sgt Gurpal Virdee. That's on the race front. What about others DS Howard Shaw v Met Police. It just goes on and on.

ANON (17/03/20 @ 19:11)

Yes long overdue and considering some forces are training as advanced motorcyclist, public order and response drivers its about time specials were properly remunerated,

Sh*t just got real. Corporal Jones get the Butchers van!

Anon (17/03/20 @ 20:56)

"Earth to Dame Diversity and retired DCS O'Connor" you two are occupying another universe.

Thewayitwas (18/03/20 @ 11:43)

Hey guys ....I also have my bad stories to tell. This is about shaking that off and helping in this awful situation. Our vast experience could really help.

Anon (18/03/20 @ 14:42)

Ha Ha Ha. The best laugh I've had for weeks!

Anon (18/03/20 @ 23:22)

Personally in times of crisis its not a bad idea ,no matter how one felt when serving its our old school attitude morally putting public interest first .

There's plenty of retired officers this would not suit, for all kinds of reasons. But equally, quite a few could well be interested, if they were to be paid suitably, in addition to their pension??

ajwp@live.com (19/03/20 @ 17:16)

As always there are some cops who get on with it and serve the public and those that don’t and just focus on themselves. If retired cops are given the opportunity to work there will be those who will step up and those who either are not fit (thigh n fault of their own) or as before would rather moan than do anything constructive.

Thewayitwas (19/03/20 @ 17:55)

Yes I agree ( fitness and all that ) the practical scenario even now is that a lot of work is completed by officers and staff who don’t have to chase bad guys. The investigations could be completed by retired guys especially if not they’ve only been out a few years. Some of us are even up to date with PACE etc as we moved into roles that used our skills.

I'm not sure how mutual aid is expected to work. It's not as if the pandemic is restricted to London, or that the rest of the UK is overflowing with spare police officers who are miraculously immune to Covid19. The Job should be asking for retirees to volunteer now, be it to prepare, or to cross it off their list of options.

Anonanon (19/03/20 @ 22:07)

The problem is a lack of openness. No-one of NPCC (or aspiring to) are willing to admit we are behind the game. Looking at other threads the capability of police numbers available and equipping those that are with the necessary PPE to deal are simply words and not actions. The framework of policing in this country has been shredded and there is no more give.

‘Somebody’s knocking at the door, somebody’s ringing the bell, do me a favour and let them in......’ Not fecking happening........ P*** Off!!

As a direct result of how officers and policing has been treated by the government during the last ten years has made it much less likely that retired officers would be willing to return. Many have left feeling bitter and resentful and hating the organisation that their forces have become. This is as a direct result of austerity and the rise of managers who are out for themselves and getting promoted above all else. Gone are the leaders of yesteryear who cared about their officers and genuinely serving the public. Sadly the entire four nation of policing is now broken and this national emergency will polarise the situation for all of society to see.
