IOPC to issue stop and search advice

paul webb (07/06/21 @ 17:59)

Teaching granny to suck eggs again are we. I was always told that if you were not getting complaints you were not doing your job. The difference now seems that even looking at somebody sideways is grounds for a complaint and the muppet squad from the IOPC are all over it for the next year or so. Part of being a good operational officer is the ability to stop and if necessary search people to prevent and detect crime!! That does not mean being rude etc. Having good manners and ability to actually talk to people always helps.

How does the IOPC manage to be so slow with its investigations? I'd guess that there were probably only 4 people involved yet it has still taken 12 months to do the investigation and that's without any CPS referrals or other processes slowing things down. Any competent PC could have spoken to all 4 people within a week with a supervisor making a decision the next week so around 2 weeks in all. The IOPC has managed to string this out for 12 months and even then they didn't find anything wrong. Despite that they still managed to squeeze out a tiny bit of learning to make themselves feel better.

Dear Mr Beesley, The very idea of IOPC offering guidance to operational police officers on stop and search is risable. The clue to what you do is in your title 'Police Conduct'...NO grounds for this complaint to be taken further with the officers concerned. Move on and take 6+ months with the next one

Isn’t it the job of the COP to issues national guidance?

Anon (07/06/21 @ 23:22)

IOPC once again pushing outside of their remit again. They are allegedly in existence to investigate Police conduct not produce training for operational officers on Stop & search. I would imagine the the IOPC's strong left wing bias and Wokesness will make any such training highly skewed and indeed dangerous.

Springbok223 (08/06/21 @ 11:19)

The IOPC are not in a position to instruct officers how to deal with stop and search. The problem now with S & S is that many of those that get stopped like the Olympic athlete will play the 'race card' knowing that it will probably end up with an IOPC investigation. wasting every ones time and money. The problem is not generally a police problem, it is the person being stopped problem, but of course they will never admit that.

Once again, dishonesty and cowardice from useless quangos is taking precedence over reality. People arguing with their emotions rather than fact, fairness and reasoning because it’s much easier to blame the police rather than discuss what the police do and why they need to do it.

Probably never turned anyone over in their lives. Any advice will be listened too but not really heard.

robkex2322 (08/06/21 @ 13:27)

More drivel from the IOPC.

Pirlo (08/06/21 @ 14:33)

Haha - brilliant. Those who have never done the job tell those who do the job how to do the job. It's like me lecturing a classroom full of electricians how to best rewire a house...

Springbok223 (08/06/21 @ 15:43)

The IOPC always has to have the last say, and they will nearly always find something to criticise even if not necessary too, it makes them feel as if they haven't lost thj case when they clearly had done.

IOPC -intentionally overreaching p@@s poor conclusions. I think I’ll go by what PACE and a crown court judge says on the matter thanks .

BobbyP (08/06/21 @ 23:19)

And yet more mission creep by iopc. What are they going to 'advise' on next... powers of arrest, custody procedure, road traffic legislation ...!!??

Notsoyoung111111 (08/06/21 @ 23:33)

every time a car gets stopped, 163, simple....if something builds then so be it, but any car can be stopped to verify details

Belligerent Badger (10/06/21 @ 21:02)

Cool, can the police repay this kind gesture by offering them some investigation advice?

Bob French (06/07/21 @ 23:20)

Listening to IOPC advice is akin to Katie Price giving marriage guidance.

Having watched a number of the stop and search performed by the Met I think retraining is needed never mind advice. We are becoming more and more like our American cousins. No understanding of the law and make it up as we go along. Fortunately the people being search do not know the law and so do not realise the breaches.
